A huge step towards justice

Louise

READING THE FIRST PARAGRAPH of Phil’s story made me realise all over again that I was about to turn the lives of many people upside down, and that I was accusing the next Commissioner of Police of rape. As I read, I was picking that today’s edition of The Dominion Post wasn’t going down too well in the Rickards household this morning.

As I read on, I admired the way Phil had put the story together. He just put all the facts, the discrepancies and the lies out there in front of the public to let them decide for themselves where the truth might lie. It was interesting to read Commissioner Rob Robinson promising to ‘study the published material’ and to ‘thoroughly look at’ anything that called the integrity of the police force into question. I had no faith in any police inquiry, because what guarantee was there that they wouldn’t like what was uncovered and wouldn’t try to sweep it under the carpet, just as Dewar had? The story was accompanied by a call I had made through The Dominion Post for a proper independent inquiry into the way the system worked (or didn’t work) ‘to ensure that as a victim of police abuses I can finally be treated fairly and decently’. I wanted the Prime Minister to set up a Commission of Inquiry.

The other piece in that morning’s Dominion Post that struck me was the editorial, by Joanne Black. Reading it, I really felt I was being believed, and it was reassuring to know that someone else viewed what had happened to me as an abuse of the powers of the police. I found the last paragraph particularly moving:

Light must at last fall in places where it has for so long been shut out. Those who conspire to protect themselves and each other from their own misdeeds should know that one day, however long it may take, they could be uncovered. We believe Mrs Nicholas. She does not see herself as an heroic battler in the mould of Karen Silkwood or Erin Brockovich tackling the Establishment, though at times her journey may feel as never-ending. Rather, she is a woman who refuses to be broken by what happened to her. The Dominion Post shares her belief that people who are powerful should not assume there is one law for them, and one for everybody else.
